CHARACTER) ____________ of the modern world is that people increasingly find themselves living side by side with people from other cultures. While in the past people with different cultures were able to live quite separately, high mobility and freedom of movement mean that we are more likely today to be confronted with people whose way the life is (42. Identify 5 mistakes in the following passage and correct them. Humans have struggled with weeds since the beginnings of agriculture. The global need for weed control has been answered mainly by the chemical industry. Its herbicides are effective and sometimes necessary, but some pose serious problems, particularly if disuse. Toxic compounds threaten animal and public health when they are present in food plants, ground water, and drinking water. They also harm workers who apply them. In recent years, the chemical industry has introduced several herbicides that are more ecologically sound. Yet new chemicals alone cannot solve the world weed problems. Therefore, scientists are exploring the innate weed-killing powers of living organisms, primarily insects and microorganisms. The biological agents now in use are harmless to humans and are environmentally friendly, and offer the benefit of specificity. They can be chosen for their ability of attacking selected targets and leave crops and other plants untouch. In contrast, some of the most effective chemicals kill almost all the plants they come in contact with, sparing only those that are naturally resistant to those that have been genetically modified for resistance. III. READING Part 1. Write the letter A, B, C, or D on your answer sheet to indicate the correct option that best fits each of the numbered blanks.
