21 A keyboard consists of different types of keys like alphabet keys, number keys, function keys and special character keys. Learning Objectives After reading this chapter, you will be able to : Identify the keys on keyboard. Recognise the functions of different keys. Keyboard 3 ALPHABET KEYS Alphabet keys or letter keys are the keys with alphabet A, B, C, D, ... , Y, Z. There are twenty-six alphabet keys on the keyboard. Number keys Function keys Alphabet keys
22 NUMBER KEYS Number keys are the keys which have 0, 1, 2, 3, 4.... written on them. There are 10 number keys. FUNCTION KEYS There are 12 function keys. They have their own special functions. A cursor (|) is a small blinking line on the monitor of a computer. It shows the position of the next letter to be typed. ENTER KEY Enter key takes the cursor to the next line. After typing a sentence you press Enter key. When you start typing again, you will be typing in the next line. There are two enter keys on a keyboard. SPACEBAR KEY It inserts a blank space(s) between the words. Spacebar is the longest key on the keyboard. BACKSPACE KEY Backspace key is found above the Enter key. It erases the character(s) to the left of the cursor and thus helps you to correct mistakes that you made while typing. For example, you have typed the wrong spelling of the word ‘COMPUTER’ as ‘COMPUTTER’. Place the cursor after the second ‘T’ and then press the backspace key to erase the extra ‘T’. ENTER KEY SPACEBAR KEY BACKSPACE KEY
23 DELETE KEY When you press the Delete Key it erases the character(s) on the right of cursor. For example, you typed the wrong spelling of PRINTER as PRINTOER. Place the cursor after the letter ‘T’ and then press the Delete Key to erase the ‘O’. CAPS LOCK KEY When Caps Lock key is ON, you see a light on the right side of the keyboard. All the alphabets you type appear in capital or upper case. For example, if you type the word ‘computer’, it will appear as COMPUTER on your monitor. When you press the caps lock key again, you will find that the light disappears. Now, on typing the alphabets they will appear in small or lower case. For example, if you type ‘machine’, then it will appear as ‘machine’ on your monitor. NUM LOCK KEY In case you wish to type numbers using numeric keypad on the right side of the keyboard, press Num Lock key and a light will appear on the top right side of the keyboard. This shows that you can now use numeric keypad. SHIFT KEY The shift key is used in combination with other keys. There are two shift keys on the keyboard. One is on the left side of the keyboard and the other is on the right side of the keyboard. It is used when you want to type the upper symbol on the keys. DELETE KEY CAPS LOCK KEY SHIFT KEY
24 PUNCTUATION KEYS ARROW KEYS 7 7 For example, if you want to type the symbol @, then press the shift key along with the key . Shift key is also used to make letters capital on your monitor. For example, if you want to write A, then press and hold shift key, while you press A key. The capital A appears on your monitor. PUNCTUATION KEYS Punctuation keys are found on the right side of alphabetic keys. These keys are used when you write a sentence or a paragraph. For example, a full stop (.) is used at the end of each sentence. ARROW KEYS There are four arrow keys on the keyboard to move the cursor left, right, up and down. Arrow marked on keys show the direction in which the cursor moves. Arrow keys are also called cursor control keys. Always press the keys on the keyboard gently. Do not sit too close to the monitor.
