WATER POLLUTION Water pollution can come from a variety of sources. Pollution can enter water directly, through both legal and illegal discharges from factories, for example, or imperfect water treatment plants. Water pollution can result in human health problems, poisoned wildlife, and long-term ecosystem damage. When agricultural and industrial runoff floods waterways with excess nutrients such as nitrogen and phosphorus, these nutrients often fuel algae blooms that then create dead zones, or low- oxygen areas where fish and other aquatic life can no longer thrive. Algae blooms can create health and economic effects for humans, causing rashes and other ailments, while eroding tourism revenue for popular lake destinations thanks to their unpleasant looks and odors. High levels of nitrates in water from nutrient pollution can also be particularly harmful to infants, interfering with their ability to deliver oxygen to tissues and potentially causing "blue baby syndrome. o discharge /ˈdɪstʃɑːrdʒ/ (n) = a substance that comes out from inside somewhere: chất thải o imperfect water treatment plants: các nhà máy xử lý nước thải không hiệu quả o runoff /ˈrʌn ɔːf/ (n): rain, water or other liquid that runs off land into streams and rivers: dòng chảy, chảy từ đất liền ra ao hồ, sông suối o aquatic /əˈkwɑːtɪk/ (adj): growing or living in, on or near water: thủy sinh o rash /ræʃ/ (n): an area of red spots on a person’s skin, caused by an illness or a reaction to something: phát ban trên da, nổi mẩn ngứa o ailment /ˈeɪlmənt/ (n) = an illness: bệnh tật o odor /ˈəʊdər/ (n) = a smell, especially one that is unpleasant: mùi o infant /ˈɪnfənt/ (n) = a baby or very young child: trẻ sơ sinh o to interfere with /ˌɪntərˈfɪr/ (v) = to prevent something from succeeding or from being done or happening as planned: can thiệp vào ... o blue baby syndrome = a condition that causes a baby's skin to turn blue: hội chứng em bé màu xanh (rối loạn máu gây ra) Source: https://www.nationalgeographic.com/environment/article/freshwater-pollution SYNONYMS o to result in human health problems » to create health effects for humans
