It covers the properties of magnets, magnetic and non-magnetic materials, poles of magnets, and the use of magnets in finding directions. The lesson also explores the interaction between magnets and includes fun activities to reinforce learning. Students should be able to- 1. Differentiate between magnetic and non- magnetic materials. 2. Identify the poles of a magnet and understand their properties. 3. Explain how a magnet always aligns itself in the north-south direction when freely suspended. 4. Describe the principle and use of a magnetic compass. 5. Demonstrate the attraction and Introduction to Magnets (TLO 1) 1. Activity 4.1: Test various objects with a magnet to identify magnetic and non- magnetic materials. 2. Discussion on the findings and introduction of the terms 'magnetic' and 'non-magnetic' materials. Poles of Magnets (TLO 2) 3. Activity 4.2: Use iron filings to visualize the magnetic field around a bar magnet. 4. Explanation of magnetic poles and their properties. Magnets and Direction (TLOs 3, 4) 5. Activity 4.3: Suspend a bar magnet and observe its alignment. 6. Introduce the concept of Earth as a giant magnet and explain the working of a magnetic compass. • Observation skills: Carefully observing and recording the behaviour of magnets • Experimentation: Conducting simple experiments with magnets • Critical thinking: Analysing results and drawing conclusions • Creativity: Designing fun activities using magnets • Quiz on magnetic and non-magnetic materials • Observation of participation in activities • Peer assessment during group activities • Written test covering key concepts (poles, compass, attraction/repulsion) • Practical test: Identifying poles of an unmarked magnet • Project: Design and explain a game or toy that uses magnets Extension Activities:
