Little did Dato’ Lim Hoe Lek know when he left China in 1910, that by 1971, he would have a hand in the tallest building in Kuantan – the Hock Bee Building. Dato’ Lim began making a name for himself in various trades from the tender age of 17 – from Singapore to Gambang and eventually Kuantan, where he settled and co-founded Hock Bee Brothers Sdn Bhd in 1947. The company grew via a diverse range of businesses, from property development to the operation of coconut & rubber plantations. Hock Bee, or 福美, was also the household name for trading in fast moving consumer goods & gas supply. The local council even named a street in Kuantan after him: "Jalan Dato' Lim Hoe Lek." It’s a reminder of his contribution to the city’s development. Ms. Elliot Brief History about Hock Bee Building The Lim family forged strong relationships with their western business partners. One of these business partners was Ms. Elliot, who had an adventurous palate. She was always keen to try out delicacies from local communities whenever she visited Kuantan. One of her favourite ingredients was local daging salai (smoked beef), which she fused with the key ingredient of another dish that was very popular in the UK during the 1970s – spaghetti carbonara. You can now enjoy Daging Salai Carbonara and other locally-inspired dishes here at Ms. Elliot, where we hope to serve you with the same creativity and hospitality.
