2 2024 Prep Doctors | All rights reserved Bone Grafts 2024 Prep Doctors | All rights reserved Barrier Membrane • Description: A biocompatible material to protect blood clot and prevent soft tissue cells invasion into bony defect. • Types: • Resorbable. • Non-resorbable. • Features of ideal barrier membrane: • Biocompatibility • Space maintenance • Cell occlusiveness • Good healing properties • Resorbability or ease of removal (non-resorbable) 3 4
3 2024 Prep Doctors | All rights reserved Barrier Membrane Resorbable membrane:Typically derived from bovine or porcine skin or tendon. • Advantages: • No need for second surgery to remove the membrane • Less likely to become exposed and less problematic if became exposed • Disadvantages • Rate of resorption maybe faster than bone formation • Do not maintain their shape and rely on bone graft or screws to maintain their shape • Resorbable membranes need to be supported by bone graft material, or tenting screws to resist collapse. Non-resorbable membrane: • Advantages: • Able to maintain separation of tissues over an extended time, unless the barrier is exposed, it can remain in place for several months to years. • Disadvantages • Second surgery required if buried under flap for membrane removal • If it gets exposed  will not heal  can lead to infection 2024 Prep Doctors | All rights reserved Dental Implants Definition: • “A prosthetic device made of alloplastic material(s) implanted into the oral tissues beneath the mucosal and/or periosteal layer and on or within the bone to provide retention and support for a fixed or removable dental prosthesis.” Glossary of Prosthodontic Terms, Edition One, J Prosthet Dent 1956;1-34 5 6
4 2024 Prep Doctors | All rights reserved Dental Implants Angled Abutments: • Abutment can come as: straight, 17-degree, 30-degree angulation. • In some clinical situations, severely resorbed bony defects or improperly placed implant may result in inappropriate implant alignment. This can cause inconsistencies between the implant long axis and the abutment long axis. To overcome this problem angled abutments can be used. • Disadvantage: The implant is subjected to non-axial loading 2024 Prep Doctors | All rights reserved LOCATORS 7 8
