LEVEL A1 – BASIC ENGLISH LISTENING @ Victoria’s Language School Add. 115/420 Lạch Tray, HP - Tel.0904144812 TRANSCRIPT 1.b The island of Okinawa Okinawa is an island about 400 miles south of Japan. It’s a 1 beautiful island with 2 wonderful beaches and 3 clear blue water. It also has more centenarians - people who are 4 100 years old or more - than anywhere else in the world. What's more, they seem to age more 5 slowly than other people. According to 6 scientists, people there who are actually 7 70 often have the bodies of 50- olds. Many of them are very 8 healthy all through their 9 lives. What's their 10 secret? Most people think it’s because of their healthy 11 lifestyle. They don't have 12 big meals - they have a cultural habit called hara hachi, which means they always stop 13 eating before they're full. They usually just have 14 fish and 15 vegetables especially 16 sweet potatoes and they eat a lot of 17 seaweed, which is one of the healthiest foods that there is. But diet isn't the only reason why they live so long. The Okinawans are very 18 active, and they often work in the 19 gardens until they're 80 or more. Many of them also do t’ai chi or martial arts every day. They have a good 20 social life. They visit 21 friends or 22 family, and a lot of them belong to 23 23 community centers. Some play the 24 traditional Okinawan guitar, an 25 instrument similar to a banjo. The old people of Okinawa are very 26 positive and happy with their lives. They aren't 27 stressed, because they're never in a hurry. Their spiritual lives are 28 important to them, especially the 29 women, and many of them meditate every day. In Okinawa, people say you're a 30 child until you are 55. And when you reach 97, your local town holds a special 31 ceremony called kajimaya to 32 celebrate the fact that now it's time to be young again, to be free of all 33 responsibilities and to simply enjoy life. 2.c 5.16 1.
