90 years of distance run by the prestigious Royal College Port Louis, my alma mater. Ninety years of fruitful service to the Mauritian Nation for having transformed and continuing to transform thousands of young kids into knowledgeable, responsible and productive citizens, many of whom having occupied or now occupying high positions in the country. Indeed, RCPL is an institution where leaders are made. Being a student at Royal College Port Louis is justifiably a matter of self-pride and self-confidence, to which should be added feelings of humility and gratitude. Gratitude to rectors, teachers and the administrative staff of the College and the Ministry of Education. It is also a matter of pride, confidence and assurance to all parents. Admission to Royal College Port Louis is secured only by merit, following high performance at the primary school leaving examinations. This in itself is a kick-start for success in life. RCPL has it all – optimum conditions and excellent facilities for a willing and determined student to make the most of nearly eight years’ schooling, ultimately coming out as a young adult having acquired the basics in terms of knowledge, skills and attitude. Thereafter being ready for university studies and later on empowered to face the long-term challenges of life, giving full expression to the school’s motto,“Vitæ Non Scholæ Discendum”. True it is that education at RCPL is for real life. My own life at the College has been an enriching experience – indeed a transformational, formative period. It was the place where the young child of 11 years who came to the brand new building in Cassis fathered himself into a 19-year-old young man, ready to take on the challenges of life with a well-prepared and open mind and a good heart, having acquired the basics of Language and World Literature, Mathematics, Geography and Science – especially the scientific method. Message of the Acting President “The Child is father of the Man” William Wordsworth
