(ii) The soil, higher temperature, good amount of rainfall or irrigation and frost-free growing season are best-suited geographical condition which are found in Maharashtra. So sugarcane has high sucrose content. 14. The iron and steel industry constitutes the backbone of modern industrial economy.' Give two reasons to justify the statement. 2017 Ans The iron and steel industry constitutes the back bone of modern industrial economy because of following reason (i) Most of the important industries such as automobile, locomotives, rail tracks, shipbuilding, machine and tools and manufacture of defence equipment depend on iron and steel industry. (ii) The production and consumption of iron and steel is one of the most significant measures of the level growth of a country. 15. (i) Name an iron and steel Industry set up in Odisha with the help of a famous German firm. 2017 (ii) From where does the industry named in (i) get its iron ore and manganese? Name two products each of the following industries. 2017 (i) petrochemical industry (ii) electronic industry Ans (i) Two products of petrochemical industry are polythene, PVC of plastic group, nylon & synthetic fibre. (ii) Two products of electronic industry are personal computers and digital cameras. 17. Mention two advantages that a mini steel plant has over an integrated iron and steel plant. 2016 Ans The two advantages of mini steel plant over an integrated iron and steel plant are: (i) This industry uses an electric arc furnace which conserves coal. (ii) It requires small capital investment. 18. Give a reason for each of the following: 2016 (i) Products made from petrochemicals are growing in popularity. (ii) The electronic industry contributes to the development of the country. Ans (i) Products made from petrochemicals are growing in popularity because they are cheaper and are durable. (ii) Biodegradable waste are wastes produced by plants and animals, kitchen, paper, green waste etc. These waste can be broken down through microbial activities of fungi and bacteria. 20. (i) Why is the iron and steel industry called a basic industry? 2015 (ii) Define a mini steel plant. Ans (i) The iron and steel industry is called a basic industry because most of the important industries such as automobiles, locomotives, rail tracks, ship building, machine and tools and manufacture of defense equipment depend on iron and steel industry. (ii) A mini steel plant is a decentralised secondary unit. It uses scrap iron which is easily available in the country and is cheap. It does not use heavy capital investment. It does not cause pollution and produces special steel. It can be set up at any convenient place as it does not need huge infrastructure. 21. (i) What is understood by biodegradable waste? 2015 (ii) State one source of gaseous waste. Ans (i) Wastes which can be degraded by microorganisms and by natural processes are known as biodegradable wastes. (ii) One source of gaseous waste is the release of carbon monoxide by automobiles. 22.
