Exam question 1 As transport and accommodation problems are increasing in many cities, some governments encourage businesses to move to rural areas. Do the advantages of moving businesses to rural areas outweigh the disadvantages? transport and accommodation problems → traffic congestion + housing shortages? Overcrowding PROS CONS - mitigate the problem of overcrowding in cities → address transport and housing problems - create job opportunities in rural areas → improve standard of living + stimulate economic growth + reduce / reverse the ongoing rural-to-urban migration - bridge the gap between rural and urban economies - infrastructure improvements and development → improve/ elevate the overall standard of living - businesses can financially benefit from such a move (lower land, property, and labor costs) → positively impact their bottom line. - shift urban problems to rural areas [an influx of businesses and migrants → strain / overwhelm rural resources and infrastructure → give rise to such problems as traffic congestion/ housing shortages] - incurred costs for constructing everything from scratch, offering subsidies or higher salaries to entice employees to relocate, establishing a robust supply chain to counter the problem of isolation … → offset / exceed the initial savings - the initial lack of infrastructure → impede business operation
of isolation in these areas. These expenses could be substantial, potentially exceeding/ offsetting any savings gained from cheaper property. In conclusion, notwithstanding certain benefits that transferring businesses to the countryside can confer, I would contend that these are overshadowed by the disadvantages.
