You will hear a health expert talking about the benefits of losing weight on your body and brain. While you listen, decide whether each statement below is true (T) or false (F). (10 points) 1. It is more difficult to lose weight in the first week than it will be later on. F 2. After some weeks, the decrease in body fat may lead to a fall in a hormone signaling fullness. T 3. It is estimated that every 4-pound weight loss will result in one pound less pressure on knee joints. F 4. One benefits of weight loss is a boost in memory. T 5. After 9 months of weight-loss practice, people’s brain is usually more sensitive to motivation. F TRANSCRIPT Here’s what losing weight does to your body and brain. (Q1) During the first week, you may find it easy to lose weight by simply switching to healthier diet. But since your metabolism adjusts, you’ll won’t burn as many calories as you used to. So, losing additional weight will become harder. Making matters worse, as the fat melts away, you’ll start to experience an increase in appetite. After a meal, fat cells release a hormone called leptin into the bloodstream. This surge in leptin level signals to your brain you’re full and should stop eating. (Q2) But with less overall fat, people who lose weight show a measurable dip in leptin. Brain scans of obese patients who had lost 10% of their body weight revealed less leptin leads to increased activity in regions of the brain that control our desire to eat. The end result isn’t just an increased appetite but an even stronger urge to eat fatty, high-calorie foods because your brain is trying to restore the body’s leptin levels to normal. However, fighting that early impulse to gorge in pizza and donuts is worth it in the long run. Besides the decreased risk of heart disease, hypertension, high cholesterol and type 2 diabetes, scientists studying overweight people discovered that (Q3) losing just one pound of body weight reduces four pounds of
2 pressure on our knee joints. Losing excess weight also reduces strain on the blood vessels, increases blood flow to the brain and boosts overall brain function. Several studies have (Q4) shown that people who underwent weight-loss surgery saw an improvement in memory, concentration, and problem-solving skills in as soon as 3 months. Plus, brain scans indicate that people who lost weight and kept it off for 9 months reacted differently when shown images of high-calorie food than before they lost weight. (Q5) The brain regions that process reward, motivation and taste didn’t react as strongly whereas the areas that promote overall self-control had a boost in activity. So fighting those cravings early on might make them easier to control later. Turns out – like anything else – losing weight can get easier with practice. PART 2. You will hear part of a lecture on volcanic activity and its effect on the atmosphere. Answer the following questions. Write NO MORE THAN THREE WORDS AND/OR A NUMBER for each answer. (10 points) 6. When did Mt. Pinatubo erupt for the first time? 5,500 years ago 7. When was the earthquake measuring 7.8 recorded? July 1990 8. When did the experts begin to study Mt. Pinatubo? In mid-March 1991 9. What fell on the local villages on 2nd April? ash 10. What does a “Level 5” alert mean? eruption in progress TRANSCRIPT Good morning, everyone. In these environmental science lectures, I guess you’re all used to hearing about global warming. Well, I’m here today to talk to you about one particular volcano and its effect on global cooling. I’ll begin by going back a little bit in time. Towards the middle of 1991, the second largest volcanic eruption of last century occurred in the Philippines, not far from the capital city, Manila, in the island of Luzon. Mount Pinatubo belongs to a chain of volcanoes in the area and this was by no means its first eruption. There is evidence of eruptions from approximately 500, 3,000 and (Q6) 5,500 years ago. The events of the 1991 Mount Pinatubo eruption began in (Q7) July 1990, when a magnitude 7.8 earthquake occurred 100 km from northeast of the Pinatubo region. The sleeping giant was reawakened, but few people had any idea of what was in store for them. (Q8) In mid-March 1991, many earthquakes were experienced around Mount Pinatubo and this is when volcano scientists (or volcanologists as they are called) started their investigation of the mountain. Before the disaster, thousands of people lived in very close proximity to the mountain, and on April 2 nd , small explosions from vents near the crater dusted their villages with (Q9) ash. This resulted in the order for evacuations of 5,000 people later that month. Earthquakes and explosions continued to harass the residents, and on June 5 th , a Level alert was issued for two weeks because of the possibility of a major eruption. However, the appearance of a large amount of lava
3 protruding from the mountain on June 7 th led to the announcement of a Level 5 alert on June 9 th , indicating an (Q10) eruption in progress. An evacuation area within 20 km of the volcano was established and this time, 25,000 people were evacuated… PART 3. You will hear part of a radio program about dancing. In this report, that’s what I’m looking into and I started at night club, where I put that question to Shirley, who was just taking a break from the dance floor. Shirley: It all happens automatically. I don’t know the scientific process but it’s all to do with the rhythm. I mean, (Q11) when you hear that drum and bass sound … you know … the hips start moving and the next thing you know you’re dancing. You just feel like it and you have to get up and go with it. I’ll dance to anything. (Q11) I like everything from the latest sounds right back to the Fifties’ rock’n’roll, as long as it’s cheerful music.
