It includes beliefs, traditions, language, arts, and customs passed down through generations. Culture shapes how people interact, perceive the world, and express their identities. It plays a vital role in guiding behaviors, influencing norms, and fostering a sense of belonging. 2. MEANING OF CULTURE:
Culture is the way of life shared by a group, including beliefs, traditions, art, and customs, passed down through generations. 3. DEFINTION OF CULTURE: ❖ According to Herskovits: “Man-made part of the environment.” ❖ According to Lowie’s: “A culture is the whole of social tradition.” 4. IMPORTANCE OF CULTURE: Culture is vital as it shapes our identity, values, and traditions. It fosters understanding, unity, and respect among diverse communities. Embracing culture enriches society, enhances communication, and preserves heritage, leading to a more inclusive and harmonious world. 5. CHARACTERISTICS OF CULTURE: Following are the characteristics of culture. ❖ Shared Beliefs and Values: Culture involves a set of shared beliefs, values, and norms that guide the behavior and decisions of its members. ❖ Language and Communication: Communication through language, whether verbal or non-verbal, is essential for transmitting cultural knowledge and ideas. ❖ Customs and Traditions: Cultures have unique customs and traditions that shape social interactions, rituals, and celebrations. ❖ Social Structure:
Culture establishes the organization of social groups, roles, and relationships within a community or society. ❖ Art and Expression: Culture is expressed through various forms of art, music, literature, dance, and other creative expressions, reflecting the unique identity and creativity of a community. 6. ELEMENTS OF CULTURE: Here are the elements of culture. ❖ Language: The way people communicate and express themselves, including spoken and written words. ❖ Customs: Shared behaviors and traditions that are passed down from generation to generation. ❖ Beliefs: The ideas and values that a group of people hold to be true or important. ❖ Art: Creative expressions such as music, dance, painting, and literature that reflect the culture's identity. ❖ Religion: The system of beliefs and practices related to the worship of a higher power or spiritual force. ❖ Food: The cuisine and eating habits that are unique to a particular culture. ❖ Clothing: The style of dress and attire that reflects cultural norms and values.

TYPES OF CULTURE: Culture can be broadly categorized into four main types. ❖Material Culture: Material culture refers to the physical objects and artifacts that a society produces, uses, and values. These can include tools, technology, buildings, clothing, art, and any other tangible items created by a group of people. Material culture provides insight into the way of life, beliefs, and customs of a particular society. ❖Non-Material Culture: Non-material culture, on the other hand, comprises the intangible aspects of a culture. This includes beliefs, values, norms, language, symbols, rituals, and customs that are shared and passed down from one generation to another. Non-material culture shapes individuals' behavior, thoughts, and social interactions. ❖ Subculture: A subculture is a smaller group within a larger society that shares distinct beliefs, values, behaviors, or interests that set them apart from the mainstream culture. Subcultures often emerge based on factors such as age, ethnicity, religion, occupation, hobbies, or lifestyle choices.
