VI - OLYMPIAD NEET BIOLOGY STUDY MATERIAL FOOD AND ITS COMPONENTS CDF-1 1. Food is essential for all the living organisms. 2. Food comprises of ingredients. Ingredients can be obtained from plants and animals sources. 3. Almost all parts of the plants such as leaves, stems, roots, fruits and seeds are considered to be edible parts. 4. Based on the food consumption, animals are grouped into four groups: Herbivores, Carnivores, Omnivores and Decomposers. 5. Herbivores: The animals which eat only plants are called as Herbivores (grass eating animals) Eg: cow, sheep, and goat. 6. Omnivores: The animals which eat both plants and animals are called as Omnivores. Eg: human beings and crows. 7. Carnivores are also called as flesh eating animals. Eg: Tiger and Vulture. 8. Decomposers: Organisms which feed on dead and decaying organic matter. Eg: Snail and Earthworms. 9. The major components of food in our body are carbohydrates, fats, proteins, vitamins and minerals. 10. Carbohydrates and fats provide energy to our body. Eg: Rice and Wheat. 11. Proteins and minerals helps in growth and maintenance of our body. Eg. Milk and Soya bean. 12. Vitamins are the organic substances which protect our body against diseases. 13. Balanced diet: A healthy diet or balanced diet is a diet (what you eat) that contains the right amounts of all the food groups. 14. Deficiency disease: The disease which is caused due to lack of some nutrients in our body for long time. 15. Dietary fibres are also known as roughage. Eg: Fresh fruits and Raw vegetables. 16. Energy can be measured as calories in our body. 17. Water helps to maintain constant body temperature.
NEET BIOLOGY STUDY MATERIAL VI - OLYMPIAD FOOD AND ITS COMPONENTS Food: Food is any substance consumed to provide nutritional support for the body. It is usually of plant or animal origin, and contains essential nutrients. USES OF FOOD IN OUR BODY: We all eat food because it provides the fundamental types of materials required to keep our bodies functioning. We need energy to enable growth and repair of tissues, to maintain body temperature and to fuel physical activity. PLANT SOURCE OF FOOD: Plant roots used as food. Eg: Carrot, Turnip, Radish, and Beetroot. Plant stems used as food. Eg: Potato, Coriander and sugarcane. Plant leaves used as food. Eg: spinach, cabbage, onion. Flowers from plants used as food. Eg: Rose, Cauliflower and Bauhinia (kachnar).
VI - OLYMPIAD NEET BIOLOGY STUDY MATERIAL Fruits on plants used as food: Pulpy fruits: Grapes, Banana, Apple. Nuts and Dry fruits: Almond, Currant (kismis). Fruits used as vegetable: Brinjal, Tomato, Gourd, and Beans. Seeds used as food: Cereals (grains) and Seeds: Paddy (rice), Maize (corn), Wheat pulses (dal): Gram (chana), Green gram (mung). Seeds yield oil which is used as food: Mustard (sarson), Sesame (oil), Coconut oil. FOOD THAT COMES FROM ANIMALS 1. Milk; 2. Eggs 3. Meat 4. Fish, prawns, crabs 5. Honey. There is a lot of variation in the food eaten in different regions of India. The main sources of our food are plants and animals. Animals which eat only plants are called herbivores.
NEET BIOLOGY STUDY MATERIAL VI - OLYMPIAD Example: Cow, Goat, Sheep etc. Animals which eat only animals are called carnivores. Example: Tiger, Lion, etc. Animals which eat both plants as well as other animals are called omnivores. Example: Bears, foxes, dogs, etc. DECOMPOSERS: The organism which feed on dead and decaying organic matter are called Decomposers. Eg: Earthworm and Snail.
