available TRANSCRIPT OFFICIAL: Hello, Tourist Information Centre, Mike speaking, how can I help you? WOMAN: Oh, hi. I wanted to find out about cookery classes. I believe there are some one-day classes for tourists? OFFICIAL: Well, they’re open to everyone, but tourists are always welcome. OK, let me give you some details of what’s available. There are several classes. One very popular one is at the Food Studio. WOMAN: OK OFFICIAL: They focus on seasonal products, and as well as teaching you how to cook them, they also show you how to choose them. WOMAN: Right, that sounds good. How big are the classes? OFFICIAL: I’m not sure exactly, but they’ll be quite small. WOMAN: And could I get a private lesson there? OFFICIAL: I think so … let me check, yes, they do offer those. Though in fact most of the people who attend the classes find it’s a nice way of getting to know one another. WOMAN: I suppose it must be, yes. OFFICIAL: And this company has a special deal for clients where they offer a discount of 20 percent if you return for a further class. WOMAN: OK. But you said there were several classes? OFFICIAL: That’s right. Another one you might be interested in is Bond’s Cookery School. They’re quite new, they just opened six months ago, but I’ve heard good things about them. They concentrate on teaching you to prepare healthy food, and they have quite a lot of specialist staff. WOMAN: So is that food for people on a diet and things like that? I don’t know if I’d be interested in that. OFFICIAL: Well, I don’t think they particularly focus on low calorie diets or weight loss. It’s more to do with recipes that look at specific needs, like including ingredients that will help build up your bones and make them stronger, that sort of thing. WOMAN: I see. Well, I might be interested, I’m not sure. Do they have a website I could check? OFFICIAL: Yes, just key in the name of the school – it’ll come up. And if you want to know more about them, every Thursday evening they have a lecture at the school. It’s free and you don’t need to book or anything, just turn up at 7.30. And that might give you an idea of whether you want to go to an actual class. OFFICIAL: OK, there’s one more place you might be interested in. That’s got a rather strange name, it’s called The Arretsa Centre – that’s spelled A-R-R-E-T-S-A. WOMAN: OK. OFFICIAL: They’ve got a very good reputation. They do a bit of meat and fish cookery but they mostly specialise in vegetarian dishes.
WOMAN: Right. That’s certainly an area I’d like to learn more about. I’ve got lots of friends who don’t eat meat. In fact, I think I might have seen that school today. Is it just by the market? OFFICIAL: That’s right. So they don’t have any problem getting their ingredients. They’re right next door. And they also offer a special two-hour course in how to use a knife. They cover all the different skills – buying them, sharpening, chopping techniques. It gets booked up quickly though so you’d need to check it was available. WOMAN: Right, well thank you very much. I’ll go and … PART 2. You will hear five short extracts in which people are talking about an experience they had. (WHILE LISTENING TO EACH SPEAKER, YOU MUST COMPLETE BOTH TASKS, TASK 1 AND TASK 2 AT THE SAME TIME). You will listen twice. Write your answers in the boxes provided. TASK 1. For questions 1-5, choose from the list (A-H) the reason why each speaker took part in the activity A. to confront a long-standing fear B. to support a worthy cause C. to acquire new friendships D. to achieve a personal milestone E. to satisfy their curiosity F. to experience competing with others G. to break the monotony in their life H. to avoid causing disappointment TRANSCRIPT Speaker one. - D Last year I ascended to the top of a frozen waterfall in Yellowstone National Park in the US. I'd been out of action following a serious back injury. This was to be my first climb in over three years, so completing it was no mean feat. Taking part was significant for me, as it marked the end of my recovery and the restart of my sporting life. I probably did bite off more than I could chew, but despite not being very fit, along with some muscular soreness during the climb, I stayed focused and I made it. I realized it really is a case of mind over matter in life, which is what I now tell others facing similar situations. Speaker two. - H When my husband presented me with tickets for a hot air balloon ride over Central Scotland, I have to admit, I did view the whole experience with a fair amount of trepidation. Anyway, since he had clearly put a great deal of effort into organizing the day, I didn't have the heart to back out. The ride lasted around an hour, and surprisingly, I thoroughly enjoyed it. Sguessly focusing on the fact that we were so high up. It has become clear to me now how much our anxieties hold us back. I'd always avoided activities that involved heights, forever concerned that I would be too petrified to enjoy it. However, as this experience showed me, things we dread are never as bad as we imagine them to be.
Speaker three. - E After listening to so many of my friends rave about their bungee jumping experiences, I wanted to know what all the fuss was about, so when an opportunity presented itself, I didn't think twice. I jumped the world- famous Nevis Highwire bungee jump in Queenstown, New Zealand. If I remember correctly, it's something close to a 440-foot drop. Luckily, I'd rehearsed jumping off the platform countless times in my head. I'd also done my research into what had involved beforehand. I didn't want any unpleasant surprises. I found bungee jumping to be an exhilarating experience, and I think that's because I didn't go into it blindly. I knew exactly what to expect, and as a result, was able to stay composed enough to really enjoy it. Speaker four. - B Last year, I wanted to do something meaningful, and that is why I was drawn to a marathon-running event that helped to raise money from the needy. I have always enjoyed running, and the fact that the marathon event was something that would push me to my limits only reinforced my decision. Unfortunately, I didn't even make it across the finish line. I managed 21 of the 26.2 miles. Initially, I was upset, but that's the great thing about marathon running. Even if you don't complete the race, most likely, you still performed well. 21 miles is actually a huge triumph. Putting things into perspective and being less outcome-oriented is something that I picked up through running, and these are principles that I now apply in all areas of life when things are not going according to plan. Speaker five. - G I started go-kart racing at a club six months ago, and was instantly hooked. It certainly serves the purpose that I intended it to, to add a bit of colour to my life, which I was seriously lacking. At the time, my weeks revolved around work and sleep, and very little else. Things are totally different now, as I'm at the track at least three nights out of seven. And what's more, I've been selected to take part in next year's regional racing tournament. I've surprised myself. As I wouldn't say I have a knack for racing, or even a competitive nature, which I used to believe was essential for achievement in all sports. Actually, dedication and lots of practice can go a long way too, which I've demonstrated. After spending hours honing my driving skills, I've made exceptional progress. TASK 2. For questions 6-10, choose from the list (A-H) what each speaker learnt from the experience A. how talent can be developed B. how to make decisions under pressures C. the importance of focusing on the process rather than the end result E. how fear can prevent you from seeing something clearly F. the power of the determination G. the importance of effective teamwork
