INSULIN ▪ Deliberate self-administered insulin overdose causes profound and prolonged hypoglycemia that may result in life- threatening seizures, coma and permanent neurological injury.
INSULIN ▪ Mechanism of Toxicity: ▪ Insulin is released from the beta-pancreatic islet cells at a low basal rate, which increases in response to various stimuli.
INSULIN ▪ Mechanism of Toxicity: ▪ Exogenous insulin is used for the treatment of type 1 and type 2 diabetes mellitus, severe hyperkalemia and calcium channel blocker overdose.
