READING COMPREHENSION Overview Reading Comprehension is the manner of understanding what you are reading. RCs test a number of skills including the knowledge of language, comprehension, and vocabulary. In the Civil Service Exam, the test is time constrained. It involves reading a considerable amount of paragraphs, articles, and passages. There are varied types of Reading Comprehension questions: asking about the details of the passage, about its meaning or sometimes about the next steps based on the information given by the article. The following are the most common kinds of questions asked: ● Fact or detail- you can scan the passage to look for the answer in this type of question. The question may be paraphrased. ● Title or main idea- look for the option that covers the largest part of the selection. Distractors often have statements that are quoted directly from the text, have omitted ideas or misstatement of ideas. ● Interpretation - This type of question asks your understanding of the selection. ● Vocabulary - Reading passages asks directly and indirectly the meanings of words. ● Inference - You are tasked to predict what might happen next. The basis of inference is the passage itself. You can answer the Reading Comprehension questions while taking into consideration the following points: 1. Be calm, don’t panic. Upon seeing the booklet, don’t be overwhelmed. 2. Read with your eyes instead of your mouth. 3. Detail obsession is a NO. Get the main points and comprehend the whole passage, prevent yourself from thinking about too many details. 4. Stop memorizing facts and words because you can always reread the passage. 5. Read the questions first and understand what it is asking then transfer to the passage to look for the answer.
6. Contextual clues can be used to help you understand the vocabulary questions. Do not get stuck on certain words, instead get the gist of the passage. 7. If you are struggling with one passage, you can skip that part and go to the next one. Focus on the one that you can manage well. If you still have time, you can go back to the tricky questions. 8. Remember that any option that is not related or is different from the passage is not the answer. Never focus on options that distract you from the passage. 9. Read attentively! A passage may focus on one point and contradict it at the latter part. Watch out for words like ‘however’, ‘but’, and ‘in contrast’. 10. First and last sentences often require extra focus. Majority of times, the answer for the main idea questions come from this part. 11. While practicing for reading comprehension questions, you can try to predict what possible questions you might encounter to increase your focus. 12. Read all the options before choosing an answer. 13. Use the elimination technique. Compare facts carefully until you eliminate the remaining incorrect choices. Remember the following concepts: ★ Mood - the overall feeling of the paragraph or passage. ★ Climax - the turning point of the story ★ Conflict - the problem ★ Plot - series of events in a story ★ Best title - usually, it talks about the main idea of the passage Let’s Practice: Instruction: Read each paragraph or passage below and select the best answer for what is being asked. 1.
